Best selling platforms

There are a variety of platforms these days where you can sell all sorts of items.

More & more apps are being made each year; making it easier to sell items without needing to use a desktop computer.

I have compiled a list of the most trusted selling platforms based on my own opinion, usage and research combined.

eBay - you can sell brand new and used items on here; from clothing, to antiques, to handcrafted items. As a private seller you get a limited amount of listings. A private account is generally to sell used items so it is great to use as a test by selling anything unwanted you may have laying around.
You can put up 'buy it now' listings for free and pay a final value fee of 10% when the item sells.
You can upgrade to a business account but once you do that; you can never revert back to an individual account.
To list under a business account; it costs per listing and the price depends on whether it is auction or a fixed price listing. This means you pay to list; even if your listing does not sell. It's currently 30p per fixed price listing; so it may be more cost effective to subscribe to a shop in the future. There are a variety of options so it is a good idea to take a look and do your research before taking the plunge.

You can list on PC or via app on a tablet or phone. The app is very handy but it can be a bit difficult to use sometimes especially when trying to sort out open cases or process refunds.

eBid - many items can be sold on here, from antiques, to clothing, to stamps. You can list for free but on the search page your listing preview will be blank. Only when you click on the listing will it show the actual photos you uploaded. If you sell an item, there will be a fee of 3% of the final value.
If you subscribe to seller+, you have the choice to pick how many days you want your listing up for. 30 days is £6.99 and lifetime is £99.98. However there is no final value fee taken.

There are a lot of different fees depending on a variety of factors; so taking a look at their fees page is highly recommended before doing anything.

You can list using a PC; there is an app available for it but it does not have raving reviews!

Depop - you can sell new and used items on Depop from clothes; to earrings, to phone cases. It is currently free to list items and you can have as many up as you want. If you are inactive for about a month; they will suspend your items temporarily; but you can get them active again when you log in.
They charge a 10% fee of the products final value including the postage fee.

You can list using a PC or via app on tablet or phone. This is available for the google play store and the apple store; so google is not left out which is good news!

Amazon - you can sell a wide range of items on Amazon including clothing, electronics, toiletries and grocies. You can test selling with just a basic selling account. There is no monthly subscription fee; you just pay when you make a sale. They take £0.75 off in fees per item sold plus an additional fee which is calculated based on what category you are selling under.
For example, selling under the books category will incur a charge of £0.50 closing fee and £2.10 referal fee which also fluctuates depending on the category you list in.

Having a subscription costs £25 (excl. VAT) monthly and there are no per item sold fee.

You can list using a PC or via safari on your phone or tablet. However I find it easier to use a PC as there is a lot going on. There are a few apps in the app store where you can monitor your business stats and respond to messages but I am unsure if you can create listings.

Etsy -  if you make your own items then this is a good place to sell your handmade goods. There are a wide variety of items that people make and sell on here from bridesmaid boxes, to jewellery, to custom painted table tops.

It costs £0.16 per listing (listing stays up for up to four months)
When an item sells there is a 5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee of 4% + £0.20

There are additional features and upgrades you can use.

Shopify -  You can sell a wide range of items using shopify on your website; and you can even embed products to any existing site or blog such as to wix or wordpress for $9 a month.
You can start a free trial which is ideal if you are a start up or small business wanting to test the waters before committing to any subscriptions. They are currently offering a 14 day trial with no credit card required. There is a shopify plus suitable for larger businesses.
They have a feature called 'Oberlo' where it can help you find and add items to your store; and then handles the products for you so you do not have to hire out a warehouse or try and find storage at home for your products.

There are three different subscriptions you can choose from, the basic one being $29 a month.
There are no transaction fees if you use shopify payments. External methods of payments will incur an additional charge of up to 2% under the 'basic shopify'.
You can upgrade or downgrade whenever you want.

You can use on a PC or via app on tablet or phone

Mercari (Available in the US, was in the UK but was shut down) - You can sell new and used items on here and there is no limit as to how many listings you can have up. It is free to list and they do not expire from what I can understand. A flat rate of 10% is taken as the selling fee.
The app is very easy to use and easy to understand.
This was personally one of my favourite selling apps ever when it was available in the UK.

Only available on the app store for the iPad and iPhone

All of the percentages and prices have been taken directly from the companies own websites so they are correct on 5th March 2020. Always keep up to date as they can change their fees.
